FESTIVALS
MOPIN FESTIVAL
The Mopin is a goddess of prosperity. Earlier, the Mopin ritual was performed in the village occasionally after performing a chicken liver investigation. Now it is celebrated as the festival of Galo since 1966. The Mopin Goddess is prayed for prosperity and wellness of plants and animals, including humans. The priest prepares the Mopin Idol with the plants, then invokes the goddess and prays for everyone's prosperity and well-being. The Mopin is annually celebrated in the months from March to April. The official date for Mopin is fixed for 5th April. During Mopin, the priest offers the animal—either Mithun, a pig, or a dog—along with food and beverages to the goddess or her team. The people normally wear white or a combination of white and black dress during the festival. The red dress is strictly prohibited during Mopin.
XWRMEN-BAQGI FESTIVAL
The Xwrmen-Baqgi is a festival of laughter based on the mythological story of Baqgi and Amek. The festival is celebrated just before the arrival of the God and Goddess GUTE-GAMRO’s with a belief that peace should prevail before the arrival of the God and Goddesses. The Xwrmen Baqgi was observed in the villages since time immemorial. But it was almost extinct due to the transition of tribes in the modern era. But to rescue the Xwrmen-Baqgi, Late Tumpak Ete (Ex-MLA) revived the Xwrmen-Baqgi in the year 1985 and declared it a festival of Galos and dedicated it to the Women Folks. The Galo Women used to celebrate the xwrmen on October 15th every year between the Winter and Summar seasons so that the deities could migrate at any time during the winter from November onwards. But now the government has declared 5th November as the official day for celebration of the Xwrmen Festival. During the festival, dramas of Baqgi and Amek are displayed to make the audience laugh. One egg is gifted to those who act as Baqgi. One pig is offered for Xwrmen Goddess during Xwrmen Baqgi Festival.
DONYI-MARI FESTIVAL
Ane Donyi and the Mari are combined to form the name Donyi-Mari. The name Ane Donyi itself serves as a representation of the goddess, and Mari is the folktale about gods and goddesses that includes greeting, invoking, and other activities. Together with Ane Donyi, all of the Ai-Agam gods, including Mopin and the protectors, are said to have appeared. Therefore, there is also prayer for the Mopin Goddesses. The society might choose to celebrate separate Mopin when Donyi-Mari is held since Mopin goddess is also welcomed to the festival. The government had officially announced 5th February as the day for the celebration of the Donyi Mari Festival.
